Around three months ago I had lunch with a thirty-nine-year-old male named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his constant relationship issues.

As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he in actual fact has no reason to complete much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished four semesters of grad school in Spanish literature.

Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and drug abuse and do something healthy about these issues. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency treatment that results in long lasting recovery.

It may be asked how counseling would help his drug and alcohol dependency. For starters, there are quite a few newly produced doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the alcohol and drug detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in treatment he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is completely nothing helpful about drug abuse and abusive and unhealthy drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the path to shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, legal problems, and a premature death. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him cope with these medical problems more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.

Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the resolve to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he desperately needs a little hope for a more fulfilling life. And the sad thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his extreme depression and addiction and continue with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is simply too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't comprehend this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs through drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the counseling he needs for his extreme depression, he can redirect his life and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

Better relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to seek the professional treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment protocol, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
