An Erratic High School Student Exhibits More Than A Few Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Suspended From School, And Has To See The School Therapist

Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting several alcohol-related problems at school. Consequently, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be allowed to return to class.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his Mom and Dad. His parents were "relatively old fashioned" and told Stephen that dropping out of school was not a doable educational game plan. They explained to Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would probably be like a lead weight around his ankles that may hurt his educational attainment for the rest of his life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mom and Dad were very unhappy that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his pals in the second.

It was obvious that his Mom and Dad were in total accord with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning before school.

When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she without pause reviewed all of the alcohol-related problems Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related activities caused quite a bit of concern by the school administrators.

Quite frankly, Stephen wondered why the principal suggested that he see a school therapist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking behavior? Because virtually all of his pals drink as much if not more than he does, essentially, drinking is no big issue. Stated differently, if nearly everybody is drinking, why is this such a big deal?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to thwart his ability to act like a responsible young man. As stated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink beer, wine, wine coolers, or hard liquor does not mean that it is right for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her discussion with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had underlined that listed various drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of information that applied chiefly to teens.

After Miss Pender listed the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was apparent that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a wake up call for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to explain the short term and the long term outcomes of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also made the effort to validate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcoholism facts and statistics that related to everyone, and particularly to underage drinkers.

Indeed, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly comprehended why he should not be engaging in hazardous and abusive drinking with or without his pals anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
