Hazardous And Careless Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Spouse, And Motivation For Positive Change
It took several years but Sarah at long last decided that she had enough with her husband's excessive and abusive drinking. She was exhausted from seeing Keith come home early in the morning from drinking rather than spending time with her and the kids. She was also fed up from the DUI Keith recently received. Moreover she was sick and tired of creating reasons for Keith when he couldn't make it to work due to his abusive and hazardous drinking.
Not only this but she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking. And finally she was exhausted from the precarious financial mess into which he had put his family due to his careless and excessive drinking behavior.
One day when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's abusive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something positive to cut into the negative cycle of Keith's careless and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked online under "alcohol treatment" and located numerous treatment clinics that were all located less than 35 miles away from where Keith and she lived.
When Sarah called each rehabilitation clinic she introduced herself and articulated that her husband was involved in abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her spouse had an excellent health insurance program at his job and that residential or outpatient alcohol abuse rehabilitation would be covered if a physician in the company health plan authorized the treatment.
After listening to Sarah describe her husband's careless drinking, the healthcare practitioner in a helpful but firm manner explained to Sarah how she may have adding to her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking through the years. How? Primarily by making excuses for him rather than allowing him to suffer the consequences of his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.
In short, the psychologist told Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's excessive and abusive drinking behavior. The psychologist also emphasized the fact that Sarah could not control her husband's actions. With the encouragement and guidance of the treatment team at the rehabilitation facility, on the other hand, she would not only be able to learn how to abstain from contributing to Keith's abusive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to make an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could go over his excessive and abusive drinking behavior with a psychologist.
Fortunately after Sarah explained this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been very disturbed by his careless drinking behavior and that he was very relieved to learn that Sarah wanted to do something affirmative about his abusive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a counselor at the local alcohol rehab clinic.
While simply calling a rehabilitation center does not ensure that an individual's abusive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more open to learning about alcohol abuse facts, scheduling an appointment is certainly a vital factor in the treatment process. And due to the fact that Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting help for his excessive and abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly enhanced.
